Sanford 360 View from the New Garden

Here's a 360 degree view of our new garden / orchard / car park / meeting room / mural area. A lot has changed in the last two years, as you can see.

You can pan around the photograph by clicking and dragging inside the photo (once it's finished loading). I'm afraid, you'll need Adobe Flash installed to view this properly.

Many thanks to Sanford Collective member Th3Pr0f for taking this photograph.

The San Interview: Danny Smith

This piece was originally published in our magazine, The San, which is cooperatively created by some of the members of Sanford Housing Coop. This is an interview with artist and former Sanford member Danny Smith, by Zoe Millington.

Danny!

What was the best thing about living in Sanford?

The best thing is the party in the Sanford Walk.  I like it ’cause you get to see people and stuff and have some fun!

I like the nice atmosphere.  I get on well with my old housemates.

What were the worst things about living here?

Bikes in the kitchen, and a lot of washing up in big piles.  And dirty habits, ’cause it upsets me, ’cause they’ve been like all drunken people and stuff.

What help did the Co-op give you?

It helped me get to my work on time, like Heart n Soul and stuff.

How did you help the Co-op?

I helped ’cause I did the flower garden - I actually helped out making it all nice.  I had a part in as a burglar in the Sanford play, and after the party I make sure I tidy the mess up.

What was it like being the only person with a learning disability living on Sanford?

I felt so pleased with myself, actually, because I want people to recognise me, that I’ve got Down’s Syndrome, and when they realise watching my documentary, who I am.

What would you say if another person with a learning disability wanted to live in the Co-op?

They have to let the person who’s got Down’s Syndrome, treat them nice and give them attention.

My advice it would be, be safe: they say it’s important.  Make sure no-one picks on a Down’s Syndrome would be nice.  Make sure to be nice and treated well.

Where are you living now?

In Oxford in Cowley - I have a flat on top of the big shopping centre, and my flat is a lot more calmer and I’m so pleased that I’ve got my own flat, ’cause it’s a lot more quiet.  And then I’ve got my local shops, and I’ll be able to do my own shop.  It’s alright to go out in and stuff.

Do you miss Sanford?

I do a bit, actually, yeah.  I’m thinking about a lot of people in Sanford Walk and stuff, like Andi, and particularly my old housemates.  That’s why I like to invite them all up to Oxford to see my new flat.

What are you doing now you’ve left Heart n Soul?

Well, I’m looking for new things up in Oxford now. Anjali in Banbury do dance, ’cause it’s a dance company, and I’m going to be looking for an art studio to keep my art in.
